My friends and I held out 2009 Fantasy Football Draft on Saturday. We play in a 12 team league and 11 of us were there for the live draft (the 12th guy lives in Utah so he obviously couldn’t make it, but was able to draft with us on the computer).
This is the first year we’ve played in a keeper league. Each team was allowed to keep 2 players from their previous roster (with exceptions… like no 1st or 2nd round guys could be kept). In order to keep a player, you must give up your draft pick 2 rounds higher then where you selected them last year (free agents being an automatic 10th round pick).
I decided to keep Ronnie Brown (had to give up my 5th round pick this year) and Kurt Warner (had to give up my 10th round pick this year). Going into a draft when a lot of the good players are already off the board is tough. I had the 7th pick in the draft and here’s how it went.
We play in a standard league. We start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF.
Round – Player
1. Randy Moss
2. Steve Smith
3. Roy Williams
4. Reggie Bush
5. Ronnie Brown (kept)
6. Willie Parker
7. LeSean McCoy
8. Darren Sproles
9. Ahmad Bradshaw
10. Kurt Warner (kept)
11. Matt Hasselbeck
12. Kellen Winslow
13. James Davis
14. Darrius Heyward-Bey
15. Chargers Defense
16. Adam Vinatieri
As you can see I am hurting big time at the RB spot. Every time my pick rolled around in the first few rounds there were no good running backs. I didn’t want to reach for a player so I kept taking the best player on my board at that spot. From picks 4-9 I went all RB to be safe. I have a couple of sleepers and injuries to someone like Jacobs or Westbrook would be gold for me since I have their backups.
I also took flyers on Heyward-Bey and James Davis late in the draft. Since we play in a keeper league, you really want to find guys that could be great down the line.
