The weather in Jacksonville is finally warm enough to head to the beach. Today, my wife and I made our first trip to Jacksonville Beach of 2009. The weather was a perfect 80 degrees with not a single cloud in the sky. The water is still cold as ice, but the weather is perfect for laying out and enjoying the sun.
We live only 5-10 minutes from the beach so we definitely take advantage of it. Sometimes I think Floridians take the beach for granted. I’ve known people in North Carolina that drove 2-3 hours just for a day at the beach. Except for my time in college at UF, I’ve never lived more then 15 minutes from the beach.
It was pretty crowded today, and I’m sure it was yesterday as well. This weekend was the unofficial opening of the beaches because of the great weather we had. I only hope this weather stays with us from here on out. It’s been unusually cold this year and we’re all ready for a change in seasons.
I’ve thought about picking up my old skimboard this summer and giving it a go. I haven’t skimmed in probably 4 years. I wonder if it’s like riding a bike…?

1Hi David — I totally get what you’re saying about Florida beaches! I’m a native Floridan (yes, there are a few of us left) and I can’t get enough. I too have always been spoiled by living less than an hour away from the shoreline. It’s freedom just knowing that you can get away and relax. Definitely try the skim board!
