Odds are that most of you reading this blog, including myself, starting our very first website without the intention of making money. I made awful looking fansites on Geocities and Angelfire back in the mid 90s. I did it for fun, for the challenge, and the love of the content. I had no idea people were making money online and never would have thought that some day I’d be one of those people. However, things change. We move on from making sites just for fun and move to making sites that can grow a business and bring in cash flow.
So that’s the question I’m asking you today… Is it all about the money?
As I look through my network of sites (in the side column on my blog), I do not see any sites on there that I’ve built just for fun. There aren’t any sites on that list that I don’t plan to monetize. There aren’t any sites on that list that aren’t for sale. The only exception I can think of is my blog, but really… I have monetized it by selling sponsored links and honestly, if someone offered me a boat load of money for it, I would sell. I hate to say it, but by the looks of it… it is all about the money.
Sure I’m not the only one? How about you… how many of the websites you own don’t produce a dime of revenue? How many of the websites that you own do you do it purely for the love of it? How many websites on your list are not for sale?
Things change. 10 years ago, people made websites for fun. They reviewed products because they liked to, not because they were making money for it. They made fan sites because they like the person, not so they can get 10 cent clicks on it.
I’m not saying all this is a bad thing, I just think it’s important not to forget why we are in this business and what brought us here. Feel free to comment if you have a website that you maintain solely for fun. I’ll gladly check it out. If you’re all about the money, that’s cool too.

1i don’t know about you, but when i was in highschool and I made those sites on angelfire, I did it “to have a website.”
Really, its funny to think about it now but back in the day that was kind of enough. Google wasn’t an empire, and people were just afraid of Microsoft and they didn’t have online omnipotence, so no worries. Right?

2Very true.. I remember submitting my sites to Infoseek… they were one of the top search engines on the net. And I remember your site got indexed right away.

3Sadly, it’s all about the money with me too.
Lots of times, I find myself designing sites around ads instead of content. It’s a bad habit that I’m working on. Actually, I’ve found that designing for content first and ads second really makes a big difference.
But, the money factor is really what makes web work interesting IMHO. Building a site with the potential to pull in thousands of dollars helps me along the way for sure. I think this is ok as long as it isn’t completely obvious that the only goal of your websites are to make a buck.
I like the new site design by the way!

4I do make some websites just for the money, but the websites making most of the money for me are the ones I am personally involved with and where I get a lot of fun and satisfaction out of running/maintaining/updating them.

6Yea back then it was for fun and now it’s more for the money. Many people are just starting to make websites just to make money from them as they see other people like JohnChow making $10k a month just from blogging.

7You at least make websites that you’re actually interested in. Some people just do it for money and money only. They don’t care what they make their site on as long as it brings money in their pockets.

8All my sites have always been to make money as a primary motivation. Wish I still owned some of the domains I had in the nineties. They’re worth a lot of money today.

11[...] I read a rather interesting post on my friend’s blog a few days ago about whether we make websites these days for personal fun or for money. When I first started to create websites, I was in high school and I was trying to learn HTML. I had no idea about adsense was and I really just thought that if I learned how to make websites, I might be able to make a few for myself just for fun. I knew that if I was good enough, people would pay me to make them, but I really had no idea I could make money on the internet. [...]
